to Your College Admission Process in 2022
Feb 9, 17, and 23, 2022

Part 1: Understanding Financial Aid—Beyond the FAFSA

Feb. 9, 4-5pm PT (7-8pm ET)

On this session, Amanda Miller (aka The Counselor Lady) and I will cover:

·        How does a college decide how much money to give a student? And can a student ask for more?

·        What are the three types of scholarships every student should look into?

·        What exactly is an enrollment manager, and how does their job impact students directly?

·        What’s the most important thing you can do to make college affordable before filling out the FAFSA?

·        Your questions! Feel free to submit yours here and I’ll select a few to ask our guest.

Amanda Miller is a financial aid specialist and college advisor based in Davidson, NC. Since 2014, she has empowered thousands of families to find their best paths through the dual processes of college admissions and college affordability. Before becoming an independent college consultant, she served for five years through Americorps—three through as an adviser in the Davidson College Advising Corps and two through Teach For America’s Delta Corps.

Part 2: College Counseling: What You Didn’t Know You Need to Know

Feb. 17, 4-5pm PT (7-8pm ET)

On this session, counselor extraordinaire Alicia Oglesby and I will discuss:

·        The purpose of the college application process

·        Where to start when you don’t know where to start

·        How to research beyond the colleges you’ve heard of

·        What role parents can play in the college application process

·        How to find joy from now until May 1st, 2023 (decision day for current 11th graders)

·        Your questions! Feel free to submit yours here and I’ll select a few to ask our guest.

Alicia Oglesby (she/her) is a co-author by night and high school counselor by day. After graduating from Howard University in DC, Alicia pursued school counseling to increase college access and overall wellness in adolescent populations. For the past 8 years, Alicia has been working toward those goals, shifting the narrative of college admission from one of privilege and exclusion to one of shared opportunity and community.

Part 3: Pretty Much Everything You Need to Know About Standardized Testing in 2022

Feb. 23, 4-5pm PT (7-8pm ET)

In this session, ed policy shaper Akil Bello and I will explore:

·        The 3 core testing questions: Should you prep, should you take, should you submit?

·        Does Test Optional… really mean test optional?

·        What’s up with the new/digital SAT— does that affect me?

·        Your questions! Feel free to submit yours here and I’ll select a few to ask our guest.

Akil Bello is the Senior Director of Advocacy and Advancement at FairTest and is a recognized expert on educational access and testing. In addition to building prep companies, consulting universities, and helping students excel on every test from the APGAR to the LSAT, Akil is also a movie star. Unsullied by highly rejective college credentials, Akil attended an HBCU and ultimately earned a bachelor's degree from a university in Brooklyn.
