The Honors Program at Middle Georgia State University (MGA) provides academically advanced students with opportunities to develop their intellectual potential through enriching educational activities, both in and outside the classroom. Dual enrollment students CAN enroll in MGA Honors classes. In fact, we have specially designed and scheduled a set of Fall 2022 Honors classes to accommodate dual enrollment students; a list of these classes appears at the bottom of this email. The usual dual enrollment advisors can register them for these classes. We hope that you will encourage your students to participate in MGA’s dual enrollment Honors classes, and that you will share the below information with them.
Contrary to some students’
assumptions, Honors classes are not more time-consuming or stress-inducing than
general college courses. It is less accurate to say that they demand more work
than to say that they demand a different level of work. While students in
general introductory classes are expected to gain a certain body of knowledge
and display that knowledge on tests and in essays, students in Honors courses
synthesize course material with other knowledge, usually related to their own
academic and professional interests, to produce work that is original and
personally relevant. While general classes tend to be subject-centered,
structured, and geared toward holding students accountable, Honors classes tend
to be student-centered, flexible, and geared toward encouraging students to
explore material in their own way. Such perks as field trips and guest
lecturers provide added bonuses--not to mention the friendships that flourish
in these small classes of similarly motivated students. In addition to their inherent
value, all of these classes are recorded with Honors designation on student
transcripts, a distinction sure to draw favorable attention on college
applications.
Dual enrollment students with a
high school GPA of 3.5 or higher are automatically qualified to enroll in MGA
Honors classes and do not need to apply. A combined SAT score of at least 1100
with a critical reading score of 580, or a composite ACT score of 24 or higher
also automatically qualifies a student, regardless of GPA. Interested students
who do not meet these requirements may apply for admission by writing a
statement of interest explaining why they would like to pursue the Honors
Program and having a teacher write a letter of recommendation on their behalf.
Both of these may be sent to the Honors Program Director via email to clay.morton@mga.edu.
Again, we hope that you will
encourage your students to take advantage of this opportunity to have an
authentic Collegiate Honors experience while still in high school. The MGA
Honors Program will provide them with rewards that will stay with them for a lifetime.
